(An earlier version of this post incorrectly listed Enrique Bradfield Jr. of the Orioles as American League Player of the Day.)
Cam Smith of the Astros is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.
Smith hit two home runs and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 8-5 win over the Mets.
Smith played in 24 minor league games in 2024 in the Chicago Cubs organization after they chose him 14th overall in the 2024 amateur draft. He was traded to the Astros in December as part of a deal that also included infielder Isaac Paredes and pitcher Hayden Wesneski in exchange for outfielder Kyle Tucker. Since Smith has yet to make his regular season Major League debut, he has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
If this were a regular season game, Smith would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
National League Player of the Day
Andrés Chaparro of the Nationals homered and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 14-7 win over the Marlins.
Chaparro played in 33 games in 2024 with the Nationals but has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game and so has 0.0 Box-Toppers points.
If this were a regular season game, Chaparro would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day.
AL and NL Batters of the Day
There are no separate AL and NL Batters of the Day for Tuesday because the overall Player of the Day is batter Cam Smith and the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Andrés Chaparro.
Notable
Braves pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has the highest 2024 Box-Toppers point total among Tuesday’s Player of the Game winners.
Schwellenbach (2IP H 0R 0BB 2K ND in the 2-1 win over the Pirates) earned 7.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 41st among NL pitchers.
Tuesday’s games
In Tuesday’s 15 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were seven Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In eight of Tuesday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Smith would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Chaparro would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
