Mets pitcher Luis Moreno is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Friday’s spring training games.

Also Friday, two players earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second time in the 2025 spring training season—Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks and Vimael Machín of the Orioles. Other notable Player of the Game winners in Friday’s spring training games include Vladimir Guererro Jr. of the Blue Jays, Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole and Pirates pitcher Mitch Keller.

Player of the Day

Moreno struck out six over two scoreless and hitless innings, walking none, in the 7-0 win over the Nationals. Moreno, who pitched the final two innings, did not earn the win or save because the Mets had taken the lead in the first inning and the winning pitcher was starter Brandon Sprout (2IP 0H 0R 0BB K W). Moreno had a +8.0 Box-Toppers game score while Sprout had a +3.0 game score. Moreno’s score was highest among all Mets players and highest among all Friday’s Player of the Game winners.

Moreno has played in Mexican leagues over the past two seasons but has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

If this were a regular season game, Moreno would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 1.0 bonus point as overall Player of the Day). However, no Box-Toppers points are awarded because it’s a preseason exhibition game.

American League Player of the Day

Jacob Wilson of the Athletics doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 13-1 win over the Reds.

Wilson played in 28 games for the Athletics in 2024 after being drafted sixth by the team in the 2023 amatuer draft. But he has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any regular season game and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

If this were a regular season game, Wilson would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.7 bonus points as AL Player of the Day).

Wilson had a +5.0 Box-Toppers game score Friday, same as another AL batter who won Player of the Game honors, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays (HR 3-3 3R 2BI in the 10-7 win over the Tigers). But Wilson beat Guerrero for AL Player of the Day because he had more runs batted in (three vs. two).

National League Batter of the Day is Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks.

National League Batter of the Day

Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks homered and went 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 6-1 win over the Royals.

This is the second time Carroll has been Box-Toppers Player of the Game in a 2025 spring training game. He was also NL Player of the Day Wednesday in the 7-1 win over the Brewers (GS 2-2 2R 4BI).

Carroll earned 3.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 63rd among NL batters.

If this were a regular season game, Carroll would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.5 bonus points as overall Player of the Day).

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Jacob Wilson.

Notable

In addition to Carroll, one other player earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second time this spring, Vimael Machín of the Orioles.

Machín (2-2 R 2BI in the 13-10 win over the Twins) was also overall Player of the Day Sunday in the 7-3 win over the Phillies (HR 2B 3-3 R 2BI).

Machín played in 112 regular season Major League games from 2020 to 2022 but has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points. He played in Mexico in 2023 and 2024.

Also notable

Pirates pitcher Mitch Keller has the highest 2024 Box-Toppers point total among Friday’s Player of the Game winners.

Keller (3IP 2H 0R BB K W in the 3-2 win over the Rays) earned 11.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 18th among NL pitchers.

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole has the highest career Box-Toppers point total among Friday’s Player of the Game winners.

One more notable thing

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole has the highest career Box-Toppers point total among Friday’s Player of the Game winners.

Cole (3.1IP 3H R 0BB 5K W in the 6-3 win over the Blue Jays) has 165.0 career Box-Toppers points, 18th-most since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. He ranks fifth among active, signed players in career points. Cole earned 9.7 points in 2024, 28th among AL pitchers.

Friday’s games

In Friday’s 16 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were nine Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In six of Friday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

One game ended in a tie (Cubs vs. Rangers), so no Player of the Game honors were awarded.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Moreno would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, Wilson would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day and Carroll would have earned 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
