About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler rises to lead Box-Toppers weekly season player rankings report, passing Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta, who led for the last four weeks.

Wheeler also rises to lead National League pitchers. In addition, Bryan Woo of the Mariners rises to lead American League pitchers, while Pete Alonso of the Mets continues to lead NL batters and Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox continues to lead AL batters.

Wheeler leads

Wheeler has 7.4 Box-Toppers points in 2025, rising from third place overall last week to first place this week. He passes Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta, who falls to sixth place overall with 6.0 points. Wheeler leads ahead of second-place player, Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo (7.0 points).

Wheeler also leads among NL pitchers ahead of second-place Pivetta.

Wheeler took the overall lead Sunday when he earned 1.7 points as NL Player of the Day.

Wheeler led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2024 with 21.4.

American League pitchers

Bryan Woo of the Mariners rises from sixth place last week to first place this week with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Max Fried of the Yankees, who falls to fifth place with 5.7 points. Woo leads AL pitchers ahead of second-place Hunter Brown of the Astros (6.4 points).

Woo ranks second overall.

National League batters

Pete Alonso of the Mets leads for the fifth straight week with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week, falling from seventh to 12th place overall. He leads ahead of second-place NL batter Carson Kelly of the Cubs (4.5 points).

American League batters

Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox leads for the second week with 5.0 Box-Toppers points, ahead of second-place Alex Bregman of the Red Sox (3.7 points).

Box-Toppers almanac

Batters won Player of the Game honors in 34 of the 92 games played, while pitchers won in 58. Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season decreased from 38.1 percent last week to 37.9 percent this week. Batters have won in 248 of the 654 total games played in 2025, with pitchers winning in 406.

Batters also had a decrease in their share of Box-Toppers points earned this season from 38.2 percent last week to 38.0 percent this week (296.9 points out of 781.0 total awarded). Pitchers have won 62.0 percent of all points.

Batters are just ahead of the pace of the all-time record low share of points earned in a season. Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
