Box-Toppers selects 9 players for 2022 Hall of Fame induction in internet writers’ ballot

Box-Toppers is voting for nine players to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in the 2022 Internet Baseball Writers Association of America (IBWAA) ballot.

Of the nine players, three are in their first year on the ballot—Tim Lincecum, Jake Peavy and Mark Teixeira. The other six all return after not receiving the necessary votes to make the hall last year, including Curt Schilling, who is on the ballot for his 10th and final year.

Marlins’ Alcantara tops players for Wednesday, Sept. 8; Twins’ Ryan tops AL players

Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Alcantara struck out 14 over nine innings, allowing one run, four hits and one walk, in the 2-1, 10-inning win over the Mets. Alcantara did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was tied, 1-1, when he exited after nine innings.

Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove, pitching a no-hitter, is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Musgrove struck out 10 in a complete-game shutout, allowing no walks, in the 3-0 win over the Rangers. Musgrove faced 28 batters, one over the minimum, allowing only one baserunner on a hit by pitch.

  • Batters overall earned precipitously fewer Box-Toppers points in the 2010s compared to the 2000s.

Bellinger, Trout win MVP Awards ahead of Box-Toppers’ decidedly outlier picks—Cole, Ozuna

Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers, who ranked third among National League batters in Box-Toppers points in 2019 with 11.2, was voted NL Most Valuable Player Thursday.

And Mike Trout of the Angels, who ranked ninth among American League batters in Box-Toppers points in 2019 with 8.7, was voted AL Most Valuable Player.

Yankees pitcher Luis Severino is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

In addition, Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole wraps up Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors after the only other player in contention for the season Box-Toppers points lead—teammate Justin Verlander—did not earn Player of the Game honors Sunday. With only one start remaining for Verlander and only 2.0 Box-Toppers points possible, Cole’s 2.7-point lead is now all but insurmountable.

Betts hit three home runs and doubled in the 10-5 win over the Yankees. Betts went 4-for-5, scoring four times and driving in five runs.

How 2019 Hall of Fame candidates fared in Box-Toppers

Four players—Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay, Edgar Martinez and Mike Mussina—were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Tuesday.

The three pitchers selected—Rivera, Halladay and Mussina—are among the top 40 players in career Box-Toppers points (tracking began in 1995). Martinez ranks ninth among designated hitters in career Box-Toppers points since 1995, but he started his career in 1987, before the advent of Box-Toppers tracking.
