White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn is Monday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Lynn struck out 11 over seven innings, allowing one run (none earned), three hits and one walk, in the 3-2 win over the Mariners.
Lynn earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.7 for the season, 65th among all players and 31st among American League pitchers.
Lynn also now has 111.8 career Box-Toppers points, 64th among all players since player tracking began in 1995. With his 2.0 points Monday, he passes two players on the “all-time” list—Jeff Kent (110.2) and Tom Glavine (110.6). (Both Kent and Glavine began their careers prior to the advent of Box-Toppers tracking in 1995. Box-Toppers projects Kent would have about 125 points if his career from 1992 were tracked and projects Glavine would have about 170 points if his career from 1987 were tracked.) Lynn now trails 63rd-ranked player Kevin Brown (112.8). Lynn ranks 17th among active players in career points, seventh among active AL pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and no walks, in the 5-0 win over the Padres.
This was Nelson’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. It was also his Major League debut.
Nelson earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 120th among NL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day—Bo Bichette of the Blue Jays hit three home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 8-4 win over the Orioles. Bichette went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in five runs.
Bichette earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 21st among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day—David Villar of the Giants homered and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 7-4 win over the Dodgers.
This was Villar’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Villar made his Major League debut July 4 and was playing in his 27th career game.
Notable—Guardians pitcher Triston McKenzie has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among Monday’s 12 Player of the Game winners.
McKenzie (5.2IP 3H 3R 2ER 2BB 5K ND in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Royals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 12.0 for the season, 18th among all players and seventh among AL pitchers.
Also notable—Aaron Judge of the Yankees becomes the 37th player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Monday.
Judge (HR 2B 2-2 2R 2BI in the 5-2 win over the Twins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.2 for the season, 35th among all players and third among AL batters, behind Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (21.0) and Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (10.7). (It should be noted that Ohtani has earned only 5.0 of his points this season as a batter and currently has the minimum number of Player of the Game honors to qualify to be ranked among batters, a status he could potentially lose.)
Judge is the fourth full-time batter to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points this season. The others are Ramirez (10.7), Pete Alonso of the Mets (13.2) and Mookie Betts of the Dodgers (11.7). The lowest number of batters to reach 10.0 points in a regular-length season is five, which happened in 2014, 2018 and 2021.
This is Judge’s second season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points. He also did it in 2017 with the Yankees, when he had 11.2 points, second among AL batters. In 2021, he had 9.0 points with the Yankees, fourth among AL batters.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
