Rangers pitcher Jon Gray is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Gray struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 2-1 win over the Giants.
Gray earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.7 for the season, 61st among all players and 29th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day
Dodgers pitcher Lance Lynn struck out nine over five innings, allowing one run (none earned), four hits and one walk, in the 6-1 win over the Rockies.
Lynn earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 3.7 for the season, 58th among NL pitchers.
Lynn now has 117.5 career Box-Toppers points, 52nd among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.7 points Friday, he passes five players on the “all-time” career points list—Torii Hunter (115.9), Todd Helton (116.4), Mark Buehrle (116.7), Adrian Beltre (116.8) and Barry Zito (117.4). He now trails 51st-ranked player, Marlins pitcher Johnny Cueto (118.2). Lynn ranks 14th among active players in career points, sixth among active NL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day
Jon Singleton of the Astros hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 11-3 win over the Angels. Singleton went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in five runs.
This was Singleton’s first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor in more than nine years. He last earned Player of the Game honors Aug. 9, 2014, with the Astros.
Singleton was later relegated to the minors by the Astros, was suspended 100 games by Major League Baseball for league drug policy violations in 2018 and later that year was released by the Astros. Singleton played in the Mexican League before signing with the Brewers in 2022 and returning to the Majors with them in 2023, before being released and re-signed by the Astros.
When he last earned Player of the Game honors, Singleton was playing in his 58th Major League game. Friday was his 128th career game. This was Singelton’s third career Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor and he now has 4.0 career points.
National League Batter of the Day
Ildemaro Vargas of the Nationals hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 8-2 win over the Athletics.
Vargas last won Player of the Game honors Sept. 29, 2018, with the Diamondbacks, nearly five years ago.
Notable
Reds pitcher Andrew Abbott has the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Friday’s 15 Player of the Game winners.
Abbott (5.2IP 4H 2R 0BB 9K W in the 9-2 win over the Pirates) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.0 for the season, 18th among all players and ninth among NL pitchers.
Abbott becomes the 18th player this season to reach 10 Box-Toppers points. Abbott is a rookie playing in his first season, so it is his first season with 10 or more points.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
