Rank*: Shows players' rank among all players in their league at that position. For example, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ranks third among AL first basemen in Box-Toppers points; Josh Naylor ranks first.
** Aaron Judge of the Yankees led AL designated hitters and outfielders in Box-Toppers points. Rather than awarding him at both positions, we picked the AL designated hitter who ranked second—Yordan Alvarez of the Astros.
§ Salvador Perez of the Royals did not qualify to rank among AL catchers in Box-Toppers points because he won none of his three Player of the Game honors in 2024 at that position. (He won two at first base and one at designated hitter.) However, Perez did play catcher in 91 of his 158 games in 2024. His 3.5 points in 2024 would rank fourth among AL catchers.
† Utility players are ranked by batters in their league. For example, Josh Smith's 2.0 Box-Toppers points is 104th among AL batters.
Eight of the 20 batters winning Silver Slugger Awards in 2024 were also among the leaders at their positions in 2024 Box-Toppers point totals.
The awards are given to the top batter in each position in both leagues, voted on by Major League Baseball coaches and managers. Box-Toppers, analyzing traditional box scores, tracks which players most help their teams win the most games, awarding points for the top player in each game.
The eight Silver Slugger award winners who also led in Box-Toppers points at their position in their league:
Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals, who led American League shortstops with 8.9 Box-Toppers points.
Jose Ramirez of the Guardians, who led AL third basemen with 9.9 points.
Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who led AL outfielders with 13.0 points.
Juan Soto of the Yankees, who ranked second among AL outfielders with 11.0 points.
Bryce Harper of the Phillies, who led National League first basemen with 8.7 points.
Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks, who led NL second basemen with 7.0 points.
Francisco Lindor of the Mets, who led NL shortstops with 10.9 points.
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers, who led NL designated hitters with 11.0 points.
Here is a position-by-position look at the Silver Slugger winners compared to Box-Toppers leaders:
AL first base: Box-Toppers grade: B
Award-winner Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays had 5.0 Box-Toppers points and ranked third among AL first basemen. The Box-Toppers points leader at the position was Josh Naylor of the Guardians with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, fourth among AL batters.
AL second base: Box-Toppers grade: B
Award-winner Jose Altuve of the Astros had 4.0 Box-Toppers points and ranked fourth among AL second basemen. The Box-Toppers points leader at the position was Brandon Lowe of the Rays with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, 10th among AL batters.
AL shortstop: Box-Toppers grade: A
Award-winner Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals also led AL shortstops with 8.9 Box-Toppers points, fifth among AL batters.
AL third base: Box-Toppers grade: A
Award-winner Jose Ramirez of the Guardians also led AL third basemen with 9.9 Box-Toppers points, third among AL batters.
AL catcher: Box-Toppers grade: C
Award-winner Salvador Perez of the Royals earned 3.5 Box-Toppers points, but did not rank among AL catchers because he did not win any of his three Player of the Game honors at that position during the season. (He won two playing first base and one as a designated hitter.) Perez played 91 of his 158 games as a catcher in 2024. Shea Langeliers of the Athletics led AL catchers with 7.5 points, ninth among AL batters. Perez’s 3.5 points in 2024 would rank fourth among AL catchers.
AL outfield: Box-Toppers grade: A-
This grade includes two As and one B.
The A grades: Award-winners Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, both of the Yankees, ranked first and second among AL outfielders. Judge had 13.0 Box-Toppers points and Soto had 11.0. Both also ranked first and second among AL batters.
The B grade: Award-winner Anthony Santander of the Orioles ranked fourth among AL outfielders with 6.5 points. Box-Toppers’ third-ranked AL outfielder is Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners, also with 6.5 points. Rodriguez ranks ahead of Santander because he had more 2023 Box-Toppers points—4.0 vs. 3.0. Rodriguez ranks 11th among AL batters and Santander ranks 12th.
AL designated hitter: Box-Toppers grade: B
Award-winner Brent Rooker of the Athletics earned 6.5 Box-Toppers points, fourth among AL designated hitters. The Box-Toppers points leader at the position is Aaron Judge of the Yankees with 13.0 Box-Toppers points, also leading AL outfielders. Rather than awarding him at both positions, we choose our second-ranked AL designated hitter, Yordan Alvarez of the Astros with 7.5 points. Alvarez ranks eighth among AL batters.
AL utility player: Box-Toppers grade: No grade
Baseball added utility players to the Silver Slugger awards in 2022, to award player versatility.
Josh Smith of the Rangers is the 2024 winner. He had 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 104th among AL batters, playing 83 games at third base, 49 games at shortstop and also played outfield and second base.
Box-Toppers gives no grade for the AL utility player award because Box-Toppers instead—violating the spirit of the utility player honor—gives an extra award to the AL batter who ranked highest in Box-Toppers points and did not receive a Silver Slugger. That player is Ryan Mountcastle of the Orioles, who earned 8.0 Box-Toppers points, sixth among AL batters and second among AL first basemen. (He played 114 of his 124 games at first base.)
NL first base: Box-Toppers grade: A
Award-winner Bryce Harper of the Phillies also led NL first basemen with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, sixth among NL batters.
NL second base: Box-Toppers grade: A
Award-winner Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks also led NL second basemen with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, 12th among NL batters.
NL shortstop: Box-Toppers grade: A
Award-winner Francisco Lindor of the Mets also led NL shortstops with 10.9 Box-Toppers points, second among NL batters.
NL third base: Box-Toppers grade: B
Award-winner Manny Machado of the Padres ranked third at the position with 7.0 Box-Toppers points. The Box-Toppers points leader at the position is Matt Chapman of the Giants with 10.2 points, fourth among NL batters.
NL catcher: Box-Toppers grade: B
Award-winner William Contreras of the Brewers ranked third at the position with 4.2 Box-Toppers points. The Box-Toppers points leader at the position is J.T. Realmuto of the Phillies with 6.5 points, 15th among NL batters.
NL outfield: Box-Toppers grade C
Box-Toppers grades all three choices with a C. Here’s a look at the three award-winners:
Jackson Merrill of the Padres ranked 10th among NL outfielders with 4.2 Box-Toppers points.
Teoscar Hernandez of the Dodgers ranked eighth among NL outfielders with 5.0 points.
Jurickson Profar of the Padres ranked 14th among NL outfielders with 4.5 points.
The three Box-Toppers points leaders among NL outfielders:
Brenton Doyle of the Rockies, who led NL outfielders with 9.7 points, fifth among NL batters.
Ian Happ of the Cubs, second among NL outfielders with 7.5 points, 10th among NL batters.
Jesus Sanchez of the Marlins, third among NL outfielders with 6.0 points, third among NL batters.
NL designated hitter: Box-Toppers grade: A
Award-winner Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers also led NL designated hitters with 11.0 Box-Toppers points, first among NL batters.
NL utility player: No Box-Toppers grade
Award-winner Mookie Betts had 3.5 Box-Toppers points, 59th among NL batters. He won Player of the Game honors three times in 2024, once playing shortstop and second base, once playing shortstop and once playing right fielder. He played 116 games in 2024, including 65 at shortstop, 43 in right field and 18 at second base.
Box-Toppers gives no grade for the NL utility player award because Box-Toppers instead—violating the spirit of the utility player honor—gives an extra award to the NL batter who ranked highest in Box-Toppers points and did not receive a Silver Slugger. That player is Willy Adames of the Brewers, whose 10.5 Box-Toppers points is second among NL shortstops and third among NL batters. (Adames played all 161 of his games as a shortstop in 2024.)
Offensive teams of the Year
Silver Slugger Awards were also given to the best offensive team in each league. The winners were the New York Yankees in the AL and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL.
The Yankees ranked fourth in overall Box-Toppers team rankings for 2024 with its players accumulating 120.9 Box-Toppers points, most among all AL teams. Batters earned 46.7 of the team’s points, sixth-most among all teams and third among AL teams. Batters comprised 38.6 percent of the Yankees’ Box-Toppers point total, the 10th-highest among all teams.
The Dodgers ranked eighth in overall Box-Toppers team rankings for 2024 with its players accumulating 113.7 Box-Toppers points. Dodgers batters combined for 47.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 11th-most among all teams and sixth among NL teams. Batters comprised 41.8 percent of the Dodgers’ Box-Toppers point total, seventh-highest among all teams.
The Arizona Diamondbacks had the highest Box-Toppers point total by batters among all teams (53.7). That is 48.4 percent of the Diamondbacks’ total 110.9 points, third-highest among all teams in batters’ share of the team’s overall points. They finished ninth in Box-Toppers team rankings.
The Colorado Rockies had the highest percentage of their team Box-Toppers point total earned by batters in 2024. Rockies batters earned 59.2 percent of the team’s total (39.1 out of 66.1 total points). The Rockies’ 66.1 Box-Toppers points was 27th among all teams.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
