BTP: Box-Toppers points
List of top 100 players since 1995 at the close of the 2016 season.

With the season at the halfway point, Kershaw is now on pace to earn 36.2 Box-Toppers points this season, which would break the single-season record of 33.7 set by Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson, who did it twice, in 2000 and 2002 (Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995). However, at this time last year, Kershaw led all players with 20.0 Box-Toppers points and was on pace to earn 40.0 points, but spent more than two months on the disabled list beginning in late June, and had only 4.4 points in the second half of the season, finishing with 24.4, in second place behind Scherzer’s 25.7.

The most Box-Toppers points Kershaw has earned in a single season is 31.5 in 2014, when he led all players. It is tied for the fourth-highest single-season Box-Toppers points by a player since tracking began in 1995.

Also, Kershaw now has 201.8 career Box-Toppers points, third-most among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails second-place player Pedro Martinez (244.8). Kershaw ranks first among all active players in career Box-Toppers points.

National League Batter of the Day—Randal Grichuk of the Cardinals hit a go-ahead, three-run, seventh-inning homer in the 10-4 win over the Diamondbacks. Grichuk also doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in five runs.

American League Batter of the Day—Carlos Correa of the Astros hit two home runs and went 2-for-3, driving in four runs, in the 6-1 win over the Athletics.

Notable—Two other players with more than 100 career Box-Toppers points also earned Player of the Game honors Thursday:

  • Cubs pitcher Jon Lester (6IP 3H R 3BB 7K ND in the 5-4 win over the Nationals) now has 149.2 career Box-Toppers points and rises to 20th place among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his point Thursday, he passes two players on the “all-time” list—Javier Vazquez (148.3) and Chipper Jones (149.0). Lester trails 19th-ranked player, Braves pitcher Bartolo Colon (151.2). Lester also now has 6.0 Box-Toppers points on the season, 12th among NL pitchers.
  • Red Sox pitcher David Price (7IP 6H 3R 0BB 7K W in the 6-3 win over the Twins) now has 108.9 career Box-Toppers points and rises to 57th place among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his point Thursday, he passes three players on the “all-time” list—Lance Berkman (108.1), Kevin Millwood (108.3) and Billy Wagner (108.7). He trails 56th-ranked player Jeff Kent (109.7). Price has 2.7 Box-Toppers points on the season, 63rd among AL pitchers.

Rankings—Jay Bruce of the Mets rises to lead NL batters in season Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday.

Bruce (2B 2-3 2R 2BI in the 6-3 win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.0 for the season, passing previous NL batting leader Matt Adams of the Braves (6.5). Bruce ranks 21st among all players.

Debut—Willy Garcia of the White Sox made his Box-Toppers debut Thursday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Garcia (2B 2-3 0R 2BI in the 4-3 win over the Yankees) made his Major League debut April 14 and was playing in his 29th career game. He is the 3,841st player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995.

Scoring—Kluber earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Kershaw earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Grichuk and Correa each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Thursday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Giants' Vogelsong, Cardinals' Adams top players for Tuesday, Oct. 7, leading their teams into the NLCS

Ryan Vogelsong allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings and led the San Francisco Giants to a National League Division Series Game 4 win, eliminating the Washington Nationals. He is Box-Toppers.com Player of the Day for Tuesday.

Vogelsong also allowed two hits, two walks and struck out four, earning a Box-Toppers game score of +3.2, the highest of any Giants player, in the 3-2 win. Vogelsong did not earn the win because after he exited the game, the Nationals tied the score, 2-2 in the top of the seventh, before the Giants took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh.

During the regular season Vogelsong had 8.7 Box-Toppers points, ranked 74th among all players, 36th among NL pitchers.

The Giants eliminate the Nationals in the best-of-five game series, 3-1, and will face the Cardinals in the NL Championship series beginning Saturday in St. Louis.

The Giants were ranked eighth in Box-Toppers team rankings with their players accumulating 110.8 Box-Toppers points during the regular season. The Nationals were ranked fourth with 115.5 Box-Toppers points.

NLDS Game 4: Cardinals 3, Dodgers 2

Matt Adams hit a three-run homer and led the St. Louis Cardinals to a National League Division Series Game 4 win, eliminating the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is Player of the Game in the 3-2 win.

Adams hit his go-ahead homer in the seventh inning off Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (who led all players in Box-Toppers points for 2014). Adams had a Box-Toppers game score of 2.0. The Cardinals win the best-of-five game series, 3-1.

Kershaw uncharacteristically lost two consecutive starts (he also lost Game 1 of the NLDS). The last time he did that was last October in the NL Championship Series, also against the Cardinals. Kershaw had 31.5 Box-Toppers points in 2014, tied for the fourth-most Box-Toppers points in a single season in the past 20 years.

Kershaw allowed only one hit through six innings. In the end, he gave up three runs, four hits and two walks over six innings, striking out nine. He had a Box-Toppers game score of +3—which was actually the highest of any player in the game.

Adams, meanwhile, had 1.0 Box-Toppers point during the regular season, ranked 530th among all players and 127th among NL batters.

The Cardinals were ranked fifth in Box-Toppers team rankings with 114.8 Box-Toppers points. The Dodgers were the highest-rated NL team, ranked second with 123.2 Box-Toppers points.

The Cardinals face the Giants in the NL Championship Series beginning Saturday.

With the elimination of the Angels, Dodgers, Athletics and Nationals, the Cardinals now have the highest Box-Toppers ranking of remaining playoff teams. They are ranked fifth with 114.8 Box-Toppers points.

No playoff games are scheduled Wednesday or Thursday. Baseball resumes Friday with Game 1 of the American League Championship Series between the Royals and Orioles in Baltimore.

NLCS Preview: Cardinals-Dodgers features 2 top-ranked NL Box-Toppers teams, top 3 overall players—Kershaw, Wainwright, Greinke

Box-Toppers playoff preview.png

The National League Championship Series beginning Friday features the top two NL teams in Box-Toppers Team Rankings and the top three players in overall Box-Toppers points.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers begins in St. Louis. The Dodgers just edged out the Cardinals as top NL team in Box-Toppers points for the season with 122.7 (second place overall, behind the Detroit Tigers). The Cardinals were in second in the NL (third overall) with 122.4.

The Cardinals had the best actual winning percentage in the NL (.599). The Dodgers were in fourth (.568), behind the Cardinals, Braves and Pirates.

The Cardinals prevailed over the Pirates in the National League Division Series. The Pirates had 115.6 Box-Toppers points for the season, ranked seventh overall. The Dodgers beat the Braves in their NLDS. The Braves had 111.0 Box-Toppers points, ranked 11th overall.

The NLCS between the Cardinals and Dodgers features the top three players in Box-Toppers Player Rankings for the season:

  • Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has 21.7 Box-Toppers points, ranked first in player rankings.
  • Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright has 20.2 points, ranked second.
  • Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke has 19.4 points, ranked third.

In addition, Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn and Shelby Miller are both in the top 10 in Box-Toppers points among NL pitchers. Lynn ranks seventh with 16.1 points and Miller ranks ninth with 15.4.

Below are position-by-position match-ups of each player likely in the starting line-up for both teams, along with the four most likely starting pitchers, the team's top closer and an extra pitcher. Also listed are each player's Box-Toppers points earned in 2013, along with their overall rank among players for the season.

If you simply add together the Box-Toppers points of these 14 key players from each team, the Cardinals have 103.7 points and the Dodgers 98.7.

If you compare them position-by-position, the Cardinals have more players with higher Box-Toppers points totals. The Cardinals have the edge in seven positions, the Dodgers in six and they tie in one position (both first basemen Matt Adams and Adrian Gonzalez have 5.0 Box-Toppers points).

In general, the Cardinals edge the Dodgers among batters, with more offensive players with higher Box-Toppers points—in fact, Hanley Ramirez is the only Dodger batter with a higher Box-Toppers point total (5.0) than his Cardinals shortstop counterpart Pete Kozma (2.5).

All three likely starting outfielders for the Dodgers have Box-Toppers point totals of 2.0 or less, meaning they were very rarely the key contributor to Dodgers wins. Carl Crawford was Player of the Game twice during the season earning 2.0 Box-Toppers points. Rookie sensation Yasiel Puig was NL Batter of the Day in his second career game June 4, earning 1.5 points, his only points of the season. And Skip Schumaker, though he appeared in 125 games, did not earn Player of the Game honors during the season, earning 0.0 Box-Toppers points.

To be fair, Dodgers pitchers were often the key contributor to the team's wins, with higher Box-Toppers game scores and earning Player of the Game honors. In fact, Dodgers pitchers have a slight edge over the Cardinals, with two of the three top overall players in Box-Toppers points (Kershaw and Greinke). The Dodgers' closer, Kenley Jansen has more Box-Toppers points than Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal (9.7 to 6.0).

So: The Dodgers have the overall higher Box-Toppers Team Ranking. The Cardinals have a better winning percentage. The Dodgers have a slight edge in pitching. The Cardinals have a seeming clear edge among batters. The Dodgers have the edge in the pitching match-up in Game 1. The Cardinals have home-field advantage. Baseball's best three players this season (by Box-Toppers measures) will be in action. It promises to be a great series.

Coming Friday: Here is the pitching match-up for Game 1 of the NL Championship Series:

NLCS Game 1, Dodgers at Cardinals

Dodgers: Zack Greinke, 19.4 Box-Toppers points, ranked third overall (see the Top 10 Player ranking list on the home page)

Cardinals: Joe Kelly, 4.0 Box-Toppers points, ranked 264th overall

In regular season games, 2.0 Box-Toppers points are awarded for Player of the Day, 1.7 for top player in the opposite league, 1.5 for top batter in each league and 1.0 for the top player in each of the other games. However, no Box-Toppers points are awarded during the postseason.
