Astros pitcher Justin Verlander is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, extending his lead in season player rankings.

Also Tuesday, two other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earn Player of the Game honors—Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon rises to sixth place and Braves pitcher Max Fried rises to seventh place.

Player of the Day—Verlander struck out 10 over six hitless, scoreless innings, allowing no walks, in the 4-2 win over the Twins.

Verlander had a no-hitter through his six innings pitched, but exited after 91 pitches. Subsequent relievers gave up six hits over the final three innings. Verlander allowed only one base runner, in the second inning, allowing a runner to reach first on a wild pitch after a strikeout.

Verlander earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 21.0 for the season, extending his lead to 3.0 points over second-place player, Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani (18.0). Verlander also leads American League pitchers ahead of Ohtani.

Verlander becomes the first player to reach 20.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022. In 2021, three players reached 20.0 points. This is Verlander’s fifth season with 20.0 or more points. His best season was 2019 with the Astros when he had 27.5 points, second among all players. Verlander led all players in 2012 with 24.8 Box-Toppers points with the Tigers.

Verlander also now has 227.6 career Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players since 1995, when player tracking began. He trails fourth-ranked player, Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (234.3) by 6.7 points. Verlander ranks third among active players in career points, behind Dodgers Pitcher Clayton Kershaw (254.6) and Scherzer. He leads active AL pitchers in career points, ahead of Royals pitcher Zack Greinke (222.5).

National League Player of the Day—Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon struck out 10 over seven innings, allowing one run, five hits and no walks, in the 3-1 win over the Tigers.

Rodon earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 15.4 for the season, rising from ninth to sixth in season player rankings. He ranks third among NL pitchers, behind Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins (17.1) and Julio Urias of the Dodgers (15.4). (Though Urias and Rodon both have 15.4 points, Urias ranks ahead because he has more 2021 Box-Toppers points—19.1 vs. 11.7.)
